Biting into a fresh apple, or other crispy produce, is a choice that illustrates the joys of healthy snacking. A healthy snack fills, energizes and provides nutrients in between meals so you can learn and work at your best. Not all snacking has to upset your nutrition goals!
While crunching into a fresh local apple in winter, you might realize that local produce is accessible year round. Apples, one of best fruits to grow in the Canadian climate, keep well in cold storage for a year meaning that healthy snacking options exist even when fresh local produce seems unavailable.
With all the activities and inspiration we’ve planned, the Great Big Crunch emphasizes the importance of food literacy, especially when it comes to students. Food literacy gives children the knowledge to improve their health, boosts local economy by encouraging growth and helps food security.
Anyone can participate in the Great Big Crunch and taking part is easy! You can crunch from home, your classroom, work, online or beyond! Pump up the crunch by registering with us here and sinking in on crunchday.
Last year, a hundred thousand students, teachers, educators and good food enthusiasts joined together to make some noise for good food education. This brings the total number of crunchers who’ve participated since 2009 to over half a million. Munch with us this year and let’s grow that number! Oh, and don’t forget to take pictures of your crunch smile and share them on Twitter or Instagram with #greatbigcrunch. Thanks a bunch!
