At Avalon Organics® we have always been devoted to honouring your health and the Earth with our pro-organic philosophy. Now our devotion to organics has been independently certified: All Avalon Organics® products meet the NSF/ANSI 305 Standard for Personal Care Products Containing Organic Ingredients. We are proud to strengthen our original pledge to safety, efficacy, organic agriculture and sustainability. Look for the NSF seal on our recyclable packaging.
All Products contain at least 70% organic content. Formulated without Parabens, harsh preservatives, synthetic fragrances, artificial colours, phthalates or potentially harmful sulfates, our products are made with 100% vegetarian, science-based nutrients and natural botanicals and are never tested on animals.
It's in our name: Avalon Organics®. Our commitment to organic agriculture extends beyond personal care formulation to a passion for homegrown sustainability, a cleaner global environment and, of course, personal health. Our dedication to these ideals is summarized in our pledge, Consciousness in Cosmetics™ : To honor our bodies and the world we live in by creating an extraordinary range of truly effective personal care products that are inherently pure, safe and certified to the NSF/ANSI 305 Standard for Personal Care Products Containing Organic Ingredients. Each of our products contains a minimum of 70% organic content from botanicals, extracts and essential oils.
Since 1994, we have worked diligently to create exceptionally pure and effective personal care products. We are inspired by organic agriculture and the ongoing struggle towards true sustainability. We are humbled by a profound respect for the life of all things, as demonstrated by our use of 100% vegetarian ingredients and our rejection of animal testing at any level. To us, honoring the body with Consciousness In Cosmetics™ is a guiding principle in our continuous journey to make safe, natural and effective products. The road from 1994 to today has been exciting and meaningful. But 2012 marked our most profoundly rewarding period, as chose to have all Avalon Organics® products become certified to the NSF/ANSI 305 Standard for Personal Care Products Containing Organic Ingredients. As we continue our journey, we are grateful for the privilege of sharing our body care formulas with you. We are humbled by this opportunity; it inspires us to create formulas that are satisfying, effective and conscious of your health and the environment we share together.
Our Mission is ConsciousnessInCosmetics™. Through an integrated formulation strategy that governs our every choice -- from ingredients to manufacturing to packaging and distribution systems -- we seek to respect the environment and the health and well-being of our consumers and the personal care industry.
First and foremost our purpose is to create an extraordinary range of truly effective personal care products that are inherently pure, safe and certified to the NSF/ANSI 305 Standard for Personal Care Products Containing Organic Ingredients.
Formulated without parabens, harsh preservatives, synthetic fragrances, artificial colors, phthalates, or potentially harmful sulfates, our products are made with 100% vegetarian, science-based nutrients and natural botanicals, and are designed to reflect your need for a pure and effective line of personal care products.
Additionally, our products are created with organic agriculture and long-term sustainability in mind. Choosing ingredients such as organic plant oils and organic botanical extracts serves a two-fold purpose: we believe that pure ingredients help us make the best safe and effective formulations and using organic material encourages a measurable expansion of organic acreage cultivation.
Why take care of yourself with personal care products that may contain potentially toxic, irritating, harsh and, in some cases, purported cancer-causing ingredients? We can't imagine.
We believe that no one should have to choose between health and beauty. That's why the purity and safety of our ingredients is of paramount importance. Because they may be absorbed directly into the body through the skin, we only use ingredients that are safe while continuing to reject a wide range of commonly used ingredients that are harsh, irritating, or in some cases toxic and potentially cancer-causing. We share our ingredient philosophy with you so that you may understand our choices and our thinking.
Preservatives: Preservatives are a necessary component of personal care products to prevent contamination from bacteria, yeasts and molds. Natural personal care products in particular contain a relatively high concentration of water and natural plant extracts, so they start as a rich environment for microbe growth. Added to that, of course we keep personal care products in the bathroom, regularly opening the containers and exposing the formulas to warm, moist air as well as bacteria that may be present on our hands. As such, personal care products must be able to withstand repeated exposure to contaminants over long periods of time.
How Do We Preserve Our Products? We reject the use of parabens and other harsh and potentially toxic preservatives, but a preservative system is necessary to maintain our formulas safety and integrity. We optimize our preservative systems, including ingredients such as sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate and benzyl alcohol, that are approved for use in personal care products and have been tested in our formulas to be effective over the course of a product's lifecycle. We also use natural ingredients, such as glycerin and plant oils, that have shown to inhibit the growth of contaminants in personal care products.
Surfactants: Surfactants are the ingredients that provide lather and do the actual cleaning in products such as shampoos, shower gels and liquid soaps. They are important ingredients because they have a significant impact on a product's efficacy. Some surfactants are associated with skin irritation, such as sodium lauryl/laureth sulfates, because they are too strong. We reject these harsh chemicals.
It takes artisanship to select and formulate with cleansers that are both gentle and effective. We use a combination of vegetable-derived sudsing agents that have a relatively large molecular structure to inhibit penetration of the skin.
Petroleum-based Ingredients: We reject the use of ingredients such as petrolatum, mineral oil and propylene glycol. While petroleum is a naturally occurring substance, it is a non-renewable resource. Additionally, many of the hundreds of petroleum-based ingredients used widely in personal care products are considered by many environmental and health organizations to be objectionable or potentially toxic.
Raising the Bar: We strive to reach the highest standards in personal care product purity and safety. As such, we are focused on the use of organic and natural plant source ingredients. We actively work to support organic acreage cultivation and our products are certified to the NSF/ANSI 305 Standard for Personal Care Products Containing Organic Ingredients. We also reject the use of parabens, harsh surfactants and petroleum-based ingredients. Additionally, we exclude the use of the following:
Our company is committed to reducing our ecological footprint to help preserve the planet, now and for future generations. Recognizing the need to be good stewards of all natural resources, we are dedicated to reducing, reusing and recycling across all areas of our business and we continuously look for new ways to help protect our planet, from the field to the factory to the shelf.
Packaging Choices. We use environmentally friendly packaging and have a corporate initiative to continually seek out opportunities to further our sustainability and reduce our environmental impact. All of our packaging is recyclable and we deliberately seek out only containers made from materials that are readily accepted by most curbside recycling programs. A majority of our plastic bottles are made from 100% post-consumer resin and we strive to maximize the use of post-consumer material in all of our containers. This creates a second use for millions of plastic bottles annually that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Our unit cartons are made with 80% post-consumer material and the paperboard is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, assuring that only responsibly sourced virgin and recycled fiber is used in its creation.
Please help us reduce landfill space and save precious resources by recycling all of your household packaging whenever possible. Together we can create a more sustainable future.
Carbon Footprint. We incessantly look for new ways to reduce our environmental impact. Whenever possible, we source packaging components and ingredients locally to reduce the carbon cost of transportation. Simple choices, like sourcing our containers from suppliers near our manufacturing facility (rather than from Asia as so many personal care manufacturers do) can make a great difference in reducing carbon emissions.
We strive to run our business in a manner that promotes long-term solutions to environmental problems, maintains the integrity of natural ecosystems, and conserves the quality of air, water, and soil for our children's children.
